2023

Initiated large-scale Restoration Forest planting under the CODE program with Base Carbon and Shell. Initiated harvest and replanting of Production Forest under DENR oversight to supply Japanese and domestic Philippine customers.

2022

Completed design, installation, and commissioning of a prototype DC Smart Grid system in Palawan, Philippines, in partnership with the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Project is part of nationwide project called “Development for Renewable Energy Applications Mainstreaming and Market Sustainability (DREAMS)

Incorporated Emerald Forestry Products to facilitate manpower and materials supplies in the forestry sector in the Philippines and SE Asia.

Formalized agreement with Base Carbon and the Philippines Department of Environment & Natural Resources to assume operational control for a 25 million/annum seedling nursery in Negros Oriental.

2021

Implemented an alliance with USAID in Negros Occidental to develop community livelihood programs, focused on cash crops, for local communities located in CODE program plantation sites.

2020

ILAW microgrid business awarded Asia Power Smart Grid Project of the Year Award, and Energy Institute Award.

Formalize South African wood pellet supply agreement with Albioma and wood feedstock supply agreement with Montigny, the largest integrated timber grower in Southern Africa.

Formed Emerale Bioenergy in South Africa to finance, build an operate a 120,000 MT/annum wood pellet plant to supply French IPP Alibioma and EDF with biomass fuel on Reunion Island.

2019

Formalized joint venture multi-million dollar investment facility with InfraCo Asia, part of the multi-government Private Infrastructure Investment Group.

Joined in an alliance with Base Carbon of Toronto and Shell to expand the CODE program to 50,000 ha of reforestation to produce certified carbon offsets and biomass for fossil fuel displacement in North and SE Asia.

Initiated discussions with Shell Trading, London, to structure and implement the first major carbon offset program in SE Asia, the Carbon Offset Development Enterprise, or CODE.

Secured $6 million in European Union grants to construct renewable energy microgrids in Mindanao: Tawi Tawi, Siargao, and Dinatat.

Formed implementation alliances with UNIDO, WWF, Mindanao Development Authority.

2018

Initiated development and planting of first large-scale reforestation program in central Philippines, Candlewick Green Canopy, to provide clean, green woody biomass for energy production in Philippines and North Asia.

Concluded strategic alliance with Citicore Renewable Energy, sister company of Megawide Construction Corporation, to manage forest plantations expanding from initial 2,000 ha to 20,000 ha over 5 years, producing major livelihood opportunities for local communities.

2017

Incorporated Element Renewables Group LLC to hold and operate Island Light & Water (ILAW – microgrids) and Candlewick Green Canopy International (biomass) businesses in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Incorporated with $8.2 million in seed capital.

2016

Initiated design and construction of clean energy sailing vessels, powered by wind and sun, based on traditional Filipino balangay and Indonesian phinisi. Crafts designed to ply inter-island routes moving biomass with up to 80% reduction in fossil fuel reliance. Candlewick Mistral Transport formed.

2015

Commenced supply of Napier Grass as clean fuel to large industrial operations in the Philippines, displacing coal and other conventional fuels with green biomass. Expanded planted energy grass plantations to over 1,500ha.

2014

Continued expansion of plantation development to over 1,000 ha of Napier Grass. Microgrids in Palawan and Visayas (Philippines) continued profitable operations 10 years after initial microgrid installation.

2013

Founded Pelletasia Holdings, the first company in the Philippines to develop commercial scale plantations to produce biomass for energy applications. Planted the first 200 ha plantation of Napier Grass, an energy grass developed by the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the University of Hawaii, in Negros Occidental Province, Philippines.

2012

Continued the expansion of community electrification with additional micro-grids throughout the Philippines. Over 20,000 individual household and business users energized, with proven growth in per capita income.

2009

Energized Malapascua Island, Cebu, with 45 hotels and over 500 households, a major tourist destination in the central Visayan region of the Philippines.

2005

Built and commissioned first microgrid in the Philippines, in Rio Tuba, Palawan, energizing previously un-electrified community of 1,000 households with 24/7 electricity. Installed and commissioned a PV solar-powered water pumping and purification station to enhance hygiene and sanitation.

2003

Founded the first microgrid company in Asia, The PowerSource Group LLC, to service off-grid communities in the Philippines. Focusing on serving the poorest third of the world‘s population who lack reliable access to electricity and clean water.
